How Cloud Storage System Works

Though Cloud storage has become all the more popular, most of them are still not aware of what cloud storage is and how it works. In order to enjoy the benefits of cloud storage completely, one needs to be aware of cloud and its benefits. What is cloud storage? Cloud Storage is a small fragment of cloud computing. You will be storing your files and other data offsite, usually through a vendor. In short, with the help of a web connection you have a strong backup of all your data which can be retrieved anytime. You do not have to worry about the disk space in your computer. Cloud storage does not limit you to store information which is one main advantage. You can also avoid overspending on extra drives and taking extra pain to transport information to them.

How Cloud Storage system works?

Cloud Storage has different kinds of setups where few have been designed to store only a specific kind of data. A few are designed to accommodate all varieties of data. All of us must be aware that blocks are the basic units of storage. The 512 byte (blocks) which is the brain of all storage devices including your hard drive formed the fundamental seed of revolution in cloud storage. Blocks live independently in a storage system and get meaning when they are grouped into files and the like. Normally, these blocks can be placed anywhere (high level systems) in such a way that they can be retrieved quickly.

So if you are looking for additional storage, companies either sell you a file system, block storage systems or sometimes a combination of these two. These methods are definitely expensive and when purchased, the new hardware comes along. In addition, they provide you a tutorial on how to handle the storage system, means to set it up and more. You will enjoy using it because of its speed and reliability. Not too long and you run out of space. Prior to cloud storage your only option would have been to purchase additional hardware. At this point, problems seep in, as you have to manage numerous hardware and searching for the smallest of information will be tiring. All these gave birth to the idea of cloud storage.

Companies like EMC, Archivas and Centera decide to bring new software to solve this growing issue. It was definitely not an easy initiative, but the result was mind-blowing and the expansion began. The need for another drive was eradicated completely. Eradicating and re-organizing happened automatically. At the same time, giants like Google and Amazon were arriving at solutions to store massive data in efficient ways. They ended up creating slightly large repositories carrying the same characteristics of private clouds. Soon it was realized that the vast space can be utilized by outsourcing and selling the extra space to other parties. This brought out the idea of a public cloud.

Google and Amazon had plenty of data centers very close to sources of power at cheap rates. Hence, they were ready to part with the storage facility for a meager amount of money. One more reason for the cheap rates of cloud storage is because they rely on low cost components to store data which are tied using intelligent software. Many were against this idea in the beginning since they relied on drives which were physical forms. The partners, Amazon and Google were not sure about the success of this storage type. They expected it to lose the battle anytime, but it turned out to be better.

The concept they ended with was simple. A particular data was saved in 10 different servers. So, this makes it easy to locate a file when you are in search of it. Even in case of natural calamities, if you happen to lose data from a particular server, the remaining 9 servers will have the data. So, you end up having numerous data centers and power sources. Cloud builds more storage nodes providing them with ample power and intelligent software to handle the data. They became reliable since they are operated by professionals and data can never be made any safer than this.

The complexity of the interface was broken down and made simple. Except for the basic features like delete, get and the like, the others were totally avoided. You were also in a position where you cannot guarantee that the stored data on cloud will be the same when retrieved. These kinds of actions were fixed by third party companies like Nasuni filter which provided some additional features like snapshots, directories and others. It was proved that stored data remained the same without even the slightest of changes.

Now that you are aware of how it works, start using it. Store all your precious data and maintain plenty of free space in your computer.
